RESIDENT INFORMATION / 01

About the Institute

Research and practical support for resident personnel since 1968.

OUR MANDATE

A more integrated you.
A more stable tomorrow.

For a long time, the technical literature concerned itself with getting here. Successful arrivals were recorded. Routes were refined. Very little was written about the morning after.

ITI was established to address that omission. We study how a being becomes part of a place: maintaining a body, understanding local customs, forming relationships and finding something useful to do on a Tuesday.

Our work begins with a simple proposition: presence requires practice. You can retain your wider perspective while learning where the recycling goes.

INSTITUTIONAL MEMORY

A brief history of staying.

Dates follow the local calendar.
Other versions exist.

  1. 1968

    The arrival problem

The North Atlantic Arrival Survey records 47 successful landings. Thirty-nine personnel struggle to remain once the novelty wears off. Eight acquire mortgages. The Institute is established to study the difference.

  2. 1976

    The Landing Leaflet

The first field guidance circulates. Useful on arrival; less useful on the following Wednesday. Requests for a second leaflet begin almost immediately.

  3. 1983

    Learning to stay

The Working Group on Persistent Embodiment publishes Technical Memorandum 83-06. Fifteen years of observations become the Earth Integration Manual. A front door receives the attention previously reserved for portals.

  4. 1998

    The archive opens

The manual is approved for general circulation on February 17. Residents can finally consult the material without first demonstrating that they already understand it.

  5. 2026

    Continuing integration

The Institute convenes at Entelechy on Salt Spring Island. Research, education and collegial exchange continue into the evening. The Department of Local Belonging has requested a sound system.

FROM THE DIRECTOR’S OFFICE

To resident personnel.

You may have arrived with an important assignment. You may have arrived without the instructions. Both circumstances are represented among our staff.

The Institute cannot tell you the complete purpose of your presence. We can help you establish a routine, keep a promise and distinguish a meaningful coincidence from a neighbour with the same coat.

Over time, a posting may become a life. Someone may begin expecting you. A place may become familiar enough that you notice when it changes. These are findings of considerable interest to us.

Please send word when you are settled. A postcard is sufficient.

WORKING PRINCIPLES

The Institute’s standing position.

01

Remain curious.

A resident is an individual, not a representative sample. Ask before generalizing to the species.

02

Respect the local.

Other beings, rooms and ecosystems have lives beyond your assignment. Permission remains useful.

03

Keep participating.

Ordinary acts of care count. The Institute does not require every contribution to be accompanied by a revelation.

PRELIMINARY FINDING

Human enough.

No further questions. Please continue doing whatever that was.

This finding does not require you to be human.
